For baselining, we use ImPACT neurocognitive testing which has been in clinical use for almost a decade and used by several professional sports leagues including the NFL, MLB, and NHL, as well as numerous amateur organizations.

Concussions cannot be seen on medical imaging studies, such as an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan and self-report of symptoms often are unreliable. However, neurocognitive testing such as ImPact, measure cognitive abilities typically disrupted by a concussion, such as memory and reaction time. In order to know if, and how severely, these functions have been disrupted, it is useful to know how the person functioned before the injury. This is where baseline testing comes in. The test utilizes game-like tasks to objectively measure aspects of memory and reaction time. The results of the test provide a “snapshot” of an individual’s typical functioning in those areas. The testing takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. It is non-invasive, not an intelligence or achievement test, and not used for educational/work planning or decisions. Baseline testing is a tool used after a suspected or known injury to assist in determining whether a concussion has been sustained, and if so, to provide information to help determine the extent of injury and the steps needed for recovery.

We do invidual baseline testing in the office or group testing at your site. We are in the room throughout the testing. Baseline testing with an experienced clinician present has the highest likelihood of yielding reliable and valid data.
