There are three levels of post- concussion assessment:
Level 1 typically is done shortly after the sustained injury to ascertain the apparent extent of the resultant difficulties and symptoms and to recommend cognitive and physical limitations, therapies, and/or other services to benefit recovery. This evaluation takes approximately two hours and includes interview and partial testing of cognitive functions. A brief report and recommendations are completed within a week. The fee for this evaluation is per hourly rate.
Level II is conducted at one to two week intervals after a Level I assessment to monitor difficulties, recovery trajectory, and to adjust recommendations as needed. Level II appointments typically are brief (approximate 30 minute appointment). Again, a brief report and recommendations are completed within a week. The fee for each Level II evaluation is determined by the hourly rate.
Level III is conducted when a full neuropsychological evaluation appears indicated to ascertain cognitive status using formal assessment measures. This evaluation consists of integrating historical information, school and medical records, interview information, and formal assessment of intellectual, cognitive, and academic functioning data. This level of assessment is typically completed when there appears to be a prolonged recovery or residual effects of a concussion that warrant further assessment. For this level of assessment, testing time takes approximately eight hours, typically spread across two sessions. I personally conduct all parts of the assessment.
